Here is a video in which Mark Nicholls & historian Charles Lewis talk about Nelson and Norfolk:

Some nice sightseeing for us foreigners - and it's a real treat to see a bit of that elaborate reenactment in 2000! Is there more video of it elsewhere on line?

The video claims the 1819 Great Yarmouth monument as the first memorial pillar to HN.
I was about to remark that Montreal (of all places) had been first past the post with a Nelson column in 1809. However Wikipedia tells me that the Dublin pillar was raised a few months earlier.

But Montreal's pillar still stands...
(Though as a native Montrealer I can tell you that its survival through the 70's is really quite surprising.)

We had a discussion some time ago on competing claims to be the first Nelson monument. I tried to click on the link I posted but it doesn't seem to work. I can't recall what it was. Is this pearl of knowledge lost for ever or can some techno-whizz (Tony, I'm looking at you) reclaim it please so that I know what I'm talking about?

viewtopic.php?f=1&t=638&hilit=monument

Mark notes that Montreal had the first statue to Nelson. (Thanks for the link, Galiano.)
It's not the only one to cause dissention. Galiano mentions the demolition of the Dublin one; the one in Barbados is a constant source of complaints and the former Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, made disparaging remarks about the occupants of Trafalgar Square. Perhaps we need a new thread: Nelson monuments folk want to get rid of.

Anna,

The link is working for me. Perhaps Tony has already fixed it! :D

Appear: thanks for your message. I can get the link but not the link in my post within that link. (Heavens, does that make sense?) Still hoping Tony can help!

Anna

I think this should work in place of the link that isn't working in the other thread:

I hope. :D

Thanks Mark. For good measure, I have now corrected it in the earlier thread as well.
