Nelson & His World

Sim Comfort's new book 'Lord Nelson's Swords' has recently been published, featuring the swords of Admiral Lord Nelson, Admiral Lord Collingwood, Admiral Sir Thomas Hardy, Admiral the Earl of Northesk and Admiral the Earl of St. Vincent, and a selection of associated City of London, Egyptian Club and Nile swords, along with a review of swords & vases from the Lloyd’s Patriotic Fund.

Produced with the support of Britain’s major museums, the book includes over 200 images including many colour pictures of a number of swords and paintings that are rarely seen by the general public. Given Sim's expertise, this should be the definitive reference book on Nelson's and related swords. It is published and printed privately as a limited edition of 500 copies, and available direct from Sim. It's not cheap at £75, but if Sim's previous books are anything to go by, the quality will be superb. I don't often spend that much on a book, but my order is going in today.

There is an interesting article, 'The Swords on the Statues of Nelson' from one of the new book's authors, plus a review of the book itself in the latest Nelson Dispatch, just recently published. Incidentally Tony, the details in the review give the price as £25.00 from Seaforth Publishing/Pen and Sword Books. Is this a misprint – or is it just not so sumptuously bound?

Kester, the book you are referring to is an entirely different book, by different authors: 'British Naval Swords & Swordsmanship', by John McGrath & Mark Barton. It has a much wider remit, covering naval swords from 1733 to 1949, and includes a chapter on Nelson's swords. It has 144 pages and is 'copiously illustrated'.

Doh – and an entirely different title, of course! My apologies. Thanks for the information Tony, both of them look to be interesting books.

Nice though, to be in possession of the much awaited Dispatch – to make the mistake from!
